Abraham Lincoln was born February 12, 1809 in his home in Kentucky. He was given the same name as his grandfather and he did not have a middle name. Abraham's parents were Thomas and Nancy Lincoln. He had two other siblings. They were Sarah Grigsby and Thomas Jr, but Thomas Jr. died when he was just a baby. When Abraham was 8 his mother Nancy died of milk sickness at the age 34. His father then remarried to Sarah Bush Lincoln. She had already had 3 children. John, Matilda, and Elizabeth. Abraham really liked Sarah. Abraham's father Thomas was very against slavery. Abraham was very smart man but he was only schooled for about a total of 18 months all together. He was homeschooled by his stepmother Sarah. She taught him how to read and write. He would read when he was at home so that he could get out of doing labor with his father, even though he was very good at using an axe. He even helped his dad make log cabins. Abraham had many different jobs. He was a rail-splitter, a river boatman, and a village postmaster, but none of these jobs satisfied him. At one time he even opened a general store in Salem, but it failed. He even later became a successful lawyer. In 1832 Lincoln ran for a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives, but he lost. He won the election for State Office in 1934 and was in the Illinois State Legislature from 1834-1842. Abraham served for United States House of Representatives from 1847-1849. When his term was over he moved back to Springfield to practice law. He became a lawyer and a very good one at that. He was given the nickname "Honest Abe" because everyone respected him so much. Hunger in Black Boy Essay
Hunger in Black Boy Have you ever experienced real hunger? The kinds of hungers that Richard experiences in Black Boy are not evident in the society where you and I reside. The present middle class citizens cannot really relate to true physical hunger. Hunger for most of us is when there is nothing that we desire to eat around the house and therefore skip one meal. This cannot even compare to the days that Richard endures without food. Physical hunger, however, is not the only hunger apparent in Richardââ¬â¢s life. Richard suffers from emotional and educational hungers as well. He yearnsfor such things as mere association with others and simple books to read. Both of which are things that most people take for granted. This efficacious autobiography, Black Boy, by Richard Wright manifests what it is like to desire such simple paraphernalia. From a very early age and for much of his life thereafter, Richard experiences chronic physical hunger. ââ¬Å"Hunger stole upon me slowly that at first I was not aware of what hunger really meant. Hunger had always been more or less at my elbow when I played, but now I began to wake up at night to find hunger standing at my bedside, staring at me gauntlyâ⬠(16). Soonafter the disappearance of Richardââ¬â¢s father, he begins to notice constant starvation. This often reappears in his ensuing life. The type of hunger that Richard describes is worse than one who has not experienced chronic hunger can even imagine. ââ¬Å"Once again I knew hunger, biting hunger, hunger that made my body aimlessly restless, hunger that kept me on edge, that made my temper flare, that made my temper flare, hunger that made hate leap out of my heart like the dart of a serpentââ¬â¢s tongue, hunger that created in me odd cravingsâ⬠(119). Because hunger has always been a part of Richardââ¬â¢s lifestyle, he cannot even imagine eating meat every day. This simple privilege would be a miracle to him, yet to most it is nothing. These weakening and piercing hungers are frequently evident where poverty dwells in the Jim Crow South. Furthermore, emotional hunger also represses much of Richardââ¬â¢s life. Richard desires attention from people. However, since he does not receive much of this at home, he does not really know how to associate with others. This provokes a problem when he leaves home because he cannot understand the friendliness of people around him. ââ¬Å"Nevertheless, I was so starved for association with people that I allowed myself to be.

Abortion Synthesis 4 - 1993 Words
Abortion One of the most constant battles our society faces is the issue of abortion. It is a controversial issue that continues to create tension and diversion among our culture. But what makes abortion such an emotional and personal conflict? Often time people arenââ¬â¢t fully aware of what takes place in the process of aborting a fetus. Letââ¬â¢s take a look at what abortion is and what makes it so controversial. By understanding what an abortion is and the different viewpoints of society, one will acquire a better idea of where they stand on this issue and how it can be relevant in oneââ¬â¢s life. So what is abortion? Abortion is the termination of unwanted pregnancy by destruction of the fetus. There are two different types of abortion; thereâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Many women are drawn to have an abortion because they are unmarried or are too young. These statistics reveal that an established religion also plays a role in oneââ¬â¢s stance on abortion. Others find economic stress as an excuse, while others donââ¬â¢t want to be married. There is also the tragedy of being raped which can make a women want an abortion. But are these reasons to kill a baby? The answer in my mind is no. The pro-life views are based on a more conservative and often religious point of view. While pro-choice activists fight for womenââ¬â¢s rights; pro-life activists fight for the right of the baby. Many people believe that a babiesââ¬â¢ life doesnââ¬â¢t begin until it is born. From both a pro-life and medical stance, we see otherwise. John Jefferson Davis does a great job in describing when a babiesââ¬â¢ life begins, ââ¬Å"It is misleading to speak about the newly conceived as ââ¬Å"potentialâ⬠human life. Prior to conception the sperm and egg represent only the potentiality of a new human life, but once fertilization has taken place, and actual human life has begun. More accurately, the newly conceived individual is an actual life with great potentialâ⬠(Abortion and the Christian, 23). Not only does pro-choice understand the medical realities of an abortion, but they also stand for the sanctity of life. This idea is often formed from the religious standpoint. There is a large amount of evidence found within the bible on the sanctity of life.
